CDC announces expanded COVID-19 booster eligibility

Updated Nov. 30, 2021. This post will continue to be updated as booster updates are released from the CDC._______________________

The CDC has authorized expanded eligibility for COVID-19 booster shots.

For individuals who received Pfizer or Moderna vaccine as their initial series, anyone age 18+ is eligible for a booster 6 months or more after their initial series. On Nov. 29, 2021, CDC announced that everyone eligible SHOULD get a booster. (This was a change from previous guidance that some eligible groups "should," and some "may.")

For individuals who received Johnson & Johnson (J&J) as their initial vaccination, anyone age 18+ SHOULD get a booster 2 or more months after the initial shot.

Boosters do NOT need to be the same brand as the original shot(s). Anyone eligible for a booster may choose any of the brands.

(Please note that a booster is different from the 3rd additional dose of Pfizer or Moderna recommended for immunocompromised individuals. The 3rd dose of Moderna or Pfizer for immunocompromised individuals can be administered 28 days or more after the original 2-dose series is complete.)
